Teenage pregnancy remains a serious challenge affecting girls’ education and opportunities in Kenya. When a girl becomes pregnant while still in school, her education can be interrupted, making it harder for her to complete her studies and pursue her career ambitions.
For teenage mothers, returning to school is often not easy. Childcare responsibilities, financial difficulties, stigma and lack of adequate support can create barriers that force some young mothers to abandon their education altogether. This can limit their future employment opportunities and increase the cycle of poverty.
However, teenage pregnancy should not mean the end of a girl’s education or dreams. Teenage mothers need understanding, guidance and practical support from their families, schools and communities. Creating safe and welcoming environments can encourage young mothers to return to school, continue their education and build independent futures.
Prevention is equally important. Parents, teachers and communities have a responsibility to provide teenagers with accurate information, mentorship and safe spaces where they can discuss challenges and seek help without fear or shame. Schools can also play an important role by strengthening life-skills education and supporting vulnerable learners.
At Telesky Foundation, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and realise their potential. A teenage pregnancy should not permanently take away a girl’s chance to receive an education.
We must invest in education, mentorship, digital skills and supportive communities that empower girls to make informed decisions and remain connected to their education.
When we keep girls in school, we protect not only their education but also their dreams, independence and future.
Every girl deserves a second chance. Every child deserves an opportunity to learn.
