Around the world, millions of children are growing up in places where conflict has become a part of daily life. Instead of attending school, playing with friends, and dreaming about their futures, many children face displacement, violence, hunger, and uncertainty. According to the United Nations and UNICEF, nearly one in five children globally now lives in a country affected by conflict, making this one of the greatest humanitarian challenges of our time.
Armed conflicts disrupt every aspect of a child’s life. Schools are damaged or forced to close, hospitals become overwhelmed or inaccessible, and families are often displaced from their homes. Many children are separated from their parents, while others are exposed to trauma that can affect their emotional and psychological well-being for years. In the most severe situations, children become victims of exploitation, forced recruitment into armed groups, child labour, or early marriage as families struggle to survive.
Education is often one of the first casualties of conflict. When schools close or become unsafe, children lose more than classroom instruction. They lose opportunities to develop critical thinking, social skills, and confidence. Prolonged interruptions to education increase the likelihood that children will never return to school, limiting their future employment opportunities and perpetuating cycles of poverty and instability.
The digital divide further compounds these challenges. In many conflict-affected regions, children lack access to computers, reliable internet, and digital learning resources. As education increasingly depends on technology, these children risk being left even further behind. Digital exclusion not only limits academic progress but also reduces access to information, online learning, and opportunities to develop the skills needed in today’s economy.
The effects of conflict extend well beyond national borders. A generation deprived of education and opportunity affects global economic growth, peacebuilding efforts, and sustainable development. Protecting children’s right to learn is therefore not only a humanitarian responsibility but also an investment in global stability and prosperity.
At the Telesky Foundation, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive regardless of where they are born or the challenges they face. While conflicts may occur far beyond Kenya’s borders, they remind us of the universal importance of safeguarding children’s education and ensuring equitable access to technology.
Our mission is rooted in the belief that education and digital inclusion can transform lives. Through laptop donation programmes, ICT infrastructure development, digital literacy training, STEM education initiatives, and partnerships with schools, the Foundation is committed to creating environments where children can build the knowledge and skills needed to shape their own futures.
Conflict teaches us that education is more than a classroom activity—it is a source of hope, resilience, and recovery. By investing in technology-enabled learning, communities can continue educating children even during times of disruption. Digital skills also prepare young people to adapt to changing circumstances, solve complex problems, and contribute meaningfully to society.
The Foundation also recognises that protecting children extends beyond providing educational resources. Safe learning environments, cybersecurity awareness, responsible digital citizenship, and psychosocial support are all essential components of preparing children for a rapidly changing world. Every child should have the confidence to learn safely, both offline and online.
As global challenges continue to evolve, collaboration between governments, schools, private organisations, development partners, and communities becomes increasingly important. Sustainable partnerships can expand access to educational technology, strengthen school resilience, and ensure that no child is left behind because of circumstances beyond their control.
Every child deserves the chance to dream, to learn, and to realise their full potential. Whether a child lives in a peaceful community or a conflict-affected region, education remains one of the most powerful tools for breaking cycles of poverty, inequality, and instability.
The Telesky Foundation calls upon individuals, corporate partners, educational institutions, and development organisations to join hands in advancing digital inclusion and quality education for children everywhere. Together, we can build a future where every learner has access to knowledge, technology, and opportunity.
Because when we invest in children today, we invest in a more peaceful, innovative, and prosperous world for generations to come.
